General Information : Records Policies/Disciplinary Clearances
Records in Student Conduct are maintained according to the federal law The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). For specific details on FERPA, please see the following:
To obtain a form that the student may sign to allow Student Conduct to release information to parents or others, please click here to access our Release of Information form.
The length of time disciplinary records are maintained depends on the type of record and the outcome of the case. For example, if a student is suspended or dismissed from the university, the records are kept permanently. If a student is placed on disciplinary probation or given an admonition, the record is maintained for 10 years. At the end of that time, the record is destroyed.
If a graduate school, professional school, or other institution, program, or employer requires a background check of your disciplinary history at Ohio State, we ask that you please do the following (no less than 7 business days before it is due):

- Please attach or give to us a self-addressed, stamped envelope so we may send your form to the correct location
- Please ensure that you have signed the form
